How to select a telecom provider without regretting it
The Business Journals by Joe Cogliano, Senior Reporter
It's an all too common story: a vice president of sales loses a big deal because of a dropped phone call or missed voice mail then storms into the office of his company's owner to blame the phone system glitch for missing quota that month.
Now the owner is ready to switch telecommunications providers.
Every business has working phones and computers so it takes some sort of pain — like that big deal gone out the window — before most business owners will even consider switching telecom companies, said Dan Baldwin, executive director of Telecom Association, which publishes BusinessPhoneNews.com.
In the past, the question of how much static is on the line and how expensive is the bill were about the only two issues that might make a business look at switching providers. These days telecom systems are infinitely more complex, tied to computers and software, so the process of selecting a new telecom provider should take a lot more consideration.

A Short Guide to VoIP
VoIP is a new form of business communications technology that is gaining popularity. Understanding this service is an essential requirement for anyone considering its implementation in their business, but what is VoIP and how does it work in the business world?
VoIP systems are an increasingly popular choice for businesses, offering them an alternative way to transmit telephone calls. Here is a quick guide of everything you need to know about business VoIP systems:
What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP is a system by which verbal calls are transmitted across a computer Internet Protocol (IP) connection instead of over a telephone line. This means that all of the correspondence and data transmitted between a business and a client is done so across one connection.
What is Hosted VoIP?
Hosted VoIP systems are designed to address some of the problems encountered from combining VoIP with PBX (Private Branch Exchange) systems. These systems can incur larger expenses due to the need to install specialist equipment in each branch or office of a business. Hosted VoIP systems use a separate hosting platform in order to eliminate this, transferring the savings onto the customers. This offers a more reliable and easily accessible service, making it easier for business to conduct their daily tasks and correspondences.
What Do You Need for a VoIP System?
VoIP systems will require one Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to be installed. This is a singular phone line which is used to give the office its broadband connection which is then used to enable the VoIP system to work.
Other than that, businesses will just need to have relevant phone handsets installed – something which they are likely to have anyway. Providers of these services will be able to advise businesses on what features and equipment they need in order to make a VoIP system work but these will usually be items already held by most businesses.
What Are The Benefits of VoIP Systems?
VoIP systems have a number of great benefits the main one of which is reduced costs. As they only require one PSTN line businesses will not have to pay for multiple line rentals. This means that they can still deal with a large volume of calls but without encountering large costs.
VoIP systems also help to reduce costs by offering businesses a number of competitive rates on calls and other services. A VoIP provider will often offer incentives in order to give businesses fair and competitive prices for their communication systems. This means that businesses could benefit from free calls between their offices and cheap international calls, or other such offers.
VoIP systems are also incredibly flexible. The amount of handsets in an office can be increased quickly and easily, allowing the VoIP system to grow and expand with the business. This means that the system is scalable and therefore more efficient and cost effective.

3 Reasons VoIP Phones Make Sense for Small Businesses
By Chris Moody
original source
You are a small business, therefore, you need an easy way to communicate with your customers and vice versa. Picking a phone system that you can rely on is a complicated, tricky business, and not really something you want to hassle with at the end of the day.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to two options. A traditional phone system relies on phone lines that are connected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), on circuits operated by Private Branch Exchange (PBX) equipment. Secondly, a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider transmits your voice over the Internet as data. Ultimately, you have to judge what's best for your company and, more importantly, what gets the job done most efficiently.
VoIP has a number of benefits over traditional, hard-line phone systems, and its statistics are impressive. Last year the FCC reported that use of VoIP increased 21%, to over 30 million VoIP subscribers in the U.S. alone.
But what are the real reasons behind its popularity? Here, I hope to target a few of the lesser-known reasons why VoIP can be useful for small businesses.
New research says IP telephony market rising fast in the United States
By Andrei Patrick
original source
At this current point in time, the amount of employees that work from home remotely (popularly called as telecommuting) is growing at a rapid pace and this rising trend has had a significant impact on communications technology. Due to this increasingly popular migration, there are so many VoIP solutions that have been designed carefully to measure up to the increasing demands from such customers.

A just released study by research firm, Companies and Markets has revealed that the IP telephony markets in the United States are reaching maturity as they say, according to a press statement. According to the firm, the report forecasts in detail that 20 percent of all business telephony will be hosted by the year 2020, as more consumers continue to realize the multiple benefits and the full potential associated with the IP telephony technology.
Furthermore, the research shows that better VoIP solutions will continue to be implemented by small businesses who have very limited budgets or financing, while larger organizations who have much less worries when it comes to capital or resources are already transitioning to a unified communications environment – some using Microsoft Lync.
Recently, Analyst Rob Enderle commented in a media statement that two of the main obstacles to VoIP hardware becoming more widely integrated in business operations include the many changes that are required for the move as well as in some cases complete opposition to the migration. He added as soon as consumers become better educated or more informed about the countless advantages of VoIP solutions, it is highly possible that "a VoIP revolution will likely take place in the next few years."
Costs associated with Unified Communications and private branch exchange (PBX) systems are dropping like flies, and some PBX companies are starting their own hosted services, potentially restraining market value. Competition has intensified in the hosted telephony market, encouraging better innovation. The report said it is expected that in future, providers will offer flexible, bundled service solutions with enhanced features, specifically designed to customers. Improvements to quality and availability of service will also attract and retain customers.
The report also has an explanation of the market landscape, including market segmentation (IP Centrex; Hosted IP PBX, and hosted UC), trends, models, opportunities, market barriers/drivers for growth, key players and end users. The report also suggests to the reader with strategic recommendations, directed towards end users and service providers.

VoIP - Benefiting Small Business
Small businesses do not have the same options as large concerns in adopting new technologies and tools. They are restricted by low funds and resources. VoIP telephone systems are a sensible choice for small businesses as they reduce costs and offer many other features that are otherwise unaffordable for the business owner.
Small businesses pay almost four times more per employee, for traditional phone services, than large businesses. VoIP service providers recognize the emerging market in small scale businesses and offer packages specially tailored to that business size.
How can VoIP phone systems benefit small businesses?
There are many advantages of having a VoIP telephone system to facilitate communication inside as well as outside the workplace. VoIP phone systems are cost-effective, reliable, easily manageable and scalable. VoIP telephone systems benefit small businesses in many ways:
Reliability: VoIP phone systems have proven to be more dependable than analog telephones.
Reasonable cost: VoIP providers offer short-term contracts to business owners. The providers may charge a sign up cost, but that is quite reasonable.
Scalability: Businesses can start with a handful of IP phones and scale up gradually. The growth of the VoIP telephone system can be proportional to the growth in business.
Easy management: VoIP phone systems can collect detailed data on the telephonic activity of the business such as incoming numbers, time of call, receiving extensions and more. All this information can be collated in a spreadsheet and provided to top management to take business decisions.
Maintainable by in-house staff: The existing IT staff can easily maintain the VoIP phone system. VoIP telephone systems are easily integrated with software and do not need expert VoIP technicians for their maintenance.
Business-friendly features: VoIP phone systems offer useful features that can be adopted by small businesses to emulate the business processes of larger organizations. Features such as auto attendants, call queues, extensions, call transfers, and conferences make the business more credible in the eyes of the calling customer. VoIP telephone systems allow users to receive voice mail and fax over email. These features increase efficiency of the staff.

VoIP vital to 4G monetisation
Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is going to be a key aspect of 4G monetisation, it has been claimed.
According to Wireless 20/20, 4G operators may be able to win a financial advantage over traditional telecoms firms by pushing ahead with the widespread roll-out of wireless VoIP solutions.
The company claimed that network operators could see a huge return on investment if they introduce cloud-based communications applications, however, many operators may want to implement an in-house solution so they have more control over its ultimate direction.
In its Maximising Operator Value from VoIP Services report, Wireless 20/20 noted that 4G operators will also have to introduce a number of value added services if they are to compete with more established industry players.
'Operators deploying VoIP over 4G networks are faced with a critical decision as to whether they should build and manage an in-house VoIP platform or partner with a cloud-based, hosted VoIP solution provider,' Wireless 20/20's principal consultant Haig Sarkissian said.
Alex Ferdman, Telinta's chief executive officer, recently told TMCnet.com that cloud computing has helped fuel the mobile VoIP market and the trend is only set to continue as VoIP becomes the de facto communication tool of the future.
VoIP Equipment Threatening Wireline Voice Service Success
By Rajani Baburajan
original source
While recent research from In-Stat finds that small business spending on wireline voice services will approach $16 billion by 2015, that number may be threatened by the increased use of VoIP services and VoIP equipment purchases.
According to In-Stat, the figure represents nearly 50 percent of the entire wireline voice services spending. Small businesses that have five to 99 employees account for around half the GDP and more than half the employment in the U.S.
Among these businesses, the hospitality and food vertical will spend the most on wireline voice services, reaching $2 billion by 2012, according to In-Stat's research titled, "US Business Spending by Size of Business and Vertical, 2010-2015: Wireline Voice Services.
However, wireline voice services could be hit by alternate technologies like VoIP, which reduces the costs of international long distance communications.
So, you wonder, what can VoIP do for my business?

Savings, Savings, Savings One of the key factors in today's world and everyone wants to cut expenses where they can. The good news is, by switching to VoIP, companies can save up to 50% on their phone bills compared with traditional carriers and there is no up front expenditure. With VoIP, data is sent over the internet, which eliminates the need for a phone closet. You know the one, with all the different colored wires that you can't seem to make sense of. Without a phone closet, there are no longer maintenance fees, "phone guys," or the need to upgrade costly software. To top it off, PriorityOne includes free phones for businesses ready to make the switch. Already have phones? We have a solution for that too. Our BuyBack Program allows businesses to trade in current qualified hardware and receive a check in return.
Unified Messaging Unified messaging means with VoIP you now have one-stop access to voice mail and e-mail. E-mails can be translated to voice messages, and voice messages can be turned into e-mails. PriorityOne also offers compatible applications and add-ons for work-groups, call centers and receptionists that includes simple instant messaging, call forwarding and employee status.
Conferencing VoIP takes the traditional audio conference to the next level, injecting collaboration capabilities so participants can exchange files, sync calendars and communicate via video.
Find Me/Follow Me Never miss a call again. Find me/Follow me is a single-number forwarding function that lets callers find you whether you're at your desks, in a hotel, working from home or on a job site. Can't get into the office because of weather or a sick kid? No problem. Stay connected with these features by routing calls anywhere with a click of a button.
Auto Attendant This feature answers incoming calls, plays music or prerecorded messages to callers on hold and supports a voice-mail tree that can route calls by employee. In other words, it can give your small business a big business feel and presence.
Expandability and Flexibility If your business has multiple locations VoIP can work wonders. Unified communications will connect remote locations seamlessly and calls between them are free.
